PDO Cog Threads: Just a New Trend or more?

PDO Cog Threads: Just a New Trend or more?

Some of the effects of the aging process and sometimes a real frustration, is a wrinkly, loose and saggy skin. But do not worry at all, simply because there is a very simple, non-surgical and effective way for a natural-looking, lifted and rejuvenating face and neck.

It is the latest trend in the aesthetic treatments in the celebrity world, and it is the well-known Thread Face Lift. Specifically, this new trend also known as “Non-surgical Facelift” or as ‘’Invisible Facelift’’, is a ‘‘non-cutting’’, minimally invasive ground breaking innovative technique that is used to achieve lifting, tightening and rejuvenation of the face, jowls and neck. It is very effective in eliminating the ageing signs and creating a much younger and smoother skin.

Is it still however, just a trend or a highly effective treatment method that could conquer the facelift world?

As already widely known, thread lift is a minimally invasive procedure that aims in tightening, lifting, supporting and rejuvenating the skin by using dissolvable threads. These threads can be made of different materials such as Polydioxanone (PDO), Polylactic Acid (PLA) and Polycaprolactone (PCA). Αs shown in the table below, their main differences lie in the purpose and goal of the treatment.

Goal of procedure

Most suitable type of thread

Rejuvenation or tightening of skin

PDO Mono Meso Threads

Moderate skin laxity requiring a moderate skin mechanical lifting (Moderate Facelift)

Moderate skin laxity requiring a moderate skin lifting (Moderate Facelift) with improvement in texture and elasticity of the skin

Severe skin laxity requiring a significant skin lifting (Significant Facelift)

Facelift surgery

In the recent years, new and improved technological advances in the field of non-surgical aesthetics have made the PDO threads an invaluable tool in non-surgical Facelift, tightening and rejuvenating the skin of the face and neck.

They consist of a colorless polyester which dissolves through a natural process in the body after about 6 months. Being highly compatible with the body, PDO threads result in a perfect outcome without pain, with faster recovery time than surgery and without any unwanted side effects or allergic reactions.

The presence of a thread on the undersurface of the skin triggers the fibroblasts, cells responsible for producing collagen, and a new collagen production begins. Collagen is an important protein for maintaining the skin’s structure and elasticity. Lack of collagen is one of the main causes of skin aging.

There are 3 main categories of PDO Threads, each used for a different goal:

  • PDO mono threads: Consists of a single filament PDO thread. Helps rejuvenate your skin by stimulating collagen production.
  • PDO cog threads: They are essentially monofilament-threads with a different design of barbs. These barbs are created to latch under the surface of  the skin like small fishhooks thus, providing support and lifting loose, sagging tissues. In the case of cog threads, collagen formation will occur both around the threads and their barbs. Thus, they are most effective for jawline lifting and slimming. Usually, 1-5 Cog PDO threads are placed in the treatment area. There are 2 commonly used types of PDO cog threads:
    • PDO thread with the press molding to produce barbs on a thread
    • PDO thread with twisting itself to have 360°helical barbs, to increase lifting effect.
  • PDO screw (or spiral) threads: Made up of one or two intertwined filaments, wrapped around the needle. Spiral PDO Threads are particularly good and widely used for providing good volume restoration to sunken areas of the skin and immediately enhancing skin structure.

PDO Cog Threads are considered the only Thread Lift that has a twofold effect:

  1. They provide an immediate physical (mechanical) lifting effect in the treated areas, due to the barbs hooking into the undersurface of the skin.
  2. They provide a biological lifting effect by gradually enhancing the natural production of new collagen leading to skin rejuvenation.

Cog PDO Threads are commonly used to:

  • Lift the cheeks
  • Correct nasolabial folds
  • Reduce the appearance of jowls in the jawline
  • Correct sagging skin in the neck
  • Perform safe and effective non-surgical rhinoplasty, arm, thigh, abdominal and buttock lift

The results are almost immediate and within 2-4 weeks you will be able to see the final results of the treatment. However, do not forget that as PDO Cog Threads stimulate collagen production, there will be ongoing improvements over the next 8 weeks.

The lifting effect may continue to last for 12-24 months.

For a permanent result, you may consider facelift surgery.

Each type of thread is best suited for a particular function and goal. PDO threads are most suitable for repositioning and revitalizing skin tissue. On the other hand, PLA and PCL threads are better at lifting sagging parts of your skin.

The main benefits of Cog Threads are:

  • Evenly pulling all tissue parts (not partial pull) depending on the directions and the angle of the Cog thread
  • Stimulation of fibroblasts to synthesize and release collagen
  • Skin Rejuvenation
  • Volume enhancement
  • Ongoing Improvement of the treated area(s)
  • Highly lifting effect for cheeks, jawline and neck
  • A moderate facelift effect
